Quonnie Pond, as it is known, is moderately developed and relatively deep.  It has a fairly strong tidal flow through the rock-lined breachway, although siltation where the channel meets the pond is interfering with efficient flushing of the pond. Water quality in the eastern section is generally good. In the western end, restricted tidal flow can result in depleted oxygen levels, and, in some restricted coves, higher bacteria levels.

The south shore barrier beach is largely owned and maintained by a number of conservation trusts and is almost completely undeveloped.  Summer boating is popular and shellfish resources support a recreational harvest.  Many people enjoy seasonal harvest of bluefish and striped bass and anglers are known to catch blackfish and weakfish in the breachway area. The free state launch ramp provides easy access to the pond for all kinds of recreational activities.
